« Élie est déjà venu et ils ne l’ont pas reconnu » (Mt 17, 10-13)
Descendant de la montagne, les disciples interrogèrent Jésus : « Pourquoi donc les scribes disent-ils que le prophète Élie doit venir d’abord ? » Jésus leur répondit : « Élie va venir pour remettre toute chose à sa place. Mais, je vous le déclare : Élie est déjà venu ; au lieu de le reconnaître, ils lui ont fait tout ce qu’ils ont voulu. Et de même, le Fils de l’homme va souffrir par eux. » Alors les disciples comprirent qu’il leur parlait de Jean le Baptiste.

Méditation
Récemment, peu de gens ont pu prédire le raz-de-marée Trump lors des élections américaines. Les sondages annonçaient que la course était serrée mais ils s’étaient trompés. Il n’est pas facile de lire les signes des temps ou la réalité de ce qui arrive, tant d’aspects nous échappent. Pierre, Jacques et Jean, sur le mont Thabor, ont vécu à ce sujet une expérience des plus décapantes. Une prise de conscience qu’ils ont faite fut de saisir que la vie se lit du dedans vers l’extérieur. Que l’humain est illuminé et transfiguré de l’intérieur par une Lumière infinie qui vient du Dieu vivant.
Si nous sommes habitués à lire la réalité à partir des faits ou de ce qui est visible, les trois disciples, soudainement, comprennent que tout doit être saisi à partir de la contemplation d’une Présence. Ils l’ont intuitionné en désirant subitement construire trois tentes pour abriter la Présence du Fils de Dieu, de Moïse et d’Élie. Ces présences, celle particulièrement d’Élie, les troublent, Ils sont d’ailleurs questionnés par la présence de ce prophète : « Pourquoi donc les scribes disent-ils que le prophète Élie doit venir d’abord ? ». Peut-être est-ce parce que Malachie a prophétisé : « Voici que je vais vous envoyer Élie le prophète, avant que n’arrive le Jour de Yahvé, grand et redoutable. Il ramènera le cœur des pères vers leurs fils et le cœur des fils vers leurs pères, de peur que je ne vienne frapper le pays d’anathème » (3, 23-24).
Jésus leur répond alors que l’Élie qui doit revenir est Jean le Baptiste, ce dont il leur avait annoncé précédemment : « Depuis les jours de Jean le Baptiste jusqu’à présent le Royaume des Cieux souffre violence, et des violents s’en emparent. Tous les prophètes en effet, ainsi que la Loi, ont mené leurs prophéties jusqu’à Jean. Et lui, si vous voulez m’en croire, il est cet Élie qui doit revenir » (Mt 11, 12-14). Jésus insiste toutefois, dans le passage d’aujourd’hui, que la mission de Jean sera de « remettre toute chose à sa place ». Jean le Baptiste est le dernier des prophètes de l’Ancienne Alliance et il est celui qui a la tâche d’annoncer la nouvelle Alliance en Jésus. Mais « au lieu de le reconnaître, ils lui ont fait tout ce qu’ils ont voulu », annonçant du même coup ce qui attend Jésus.
Les trois disciples saisissent ainsi qu’il y a une force divine puissante qui travaille le monde et contre laquelle ce monde se rebiffe. Cette force, saint Paul, en parlant du prophète Élie, dira qu’elle est celle-là même qui les travaille et qui les appelle : « Ainsi pareillement aujourd’hui il subsiste un reste, élu par grâce » (Rm 11, 5). Si nous ne fermons pas notre cœur, la grâce de Dieu, encore aujourd’hui, nous choisit pour que nous allions porter au monde ce mystère de la Présence, trésor précieux et caché en creux du monde.
Nous sommes des Jean le Baptiste, menacés encore aujourd’hui, mais le Fils a comblé les menaces de nos haines par un Amour infini. Quel appel incroyable nous est-il fait de révéler Dieu en plantant, au cœur du monde, la tente fragile de Dieu que nous sommes ! Le monde a besoin d’êtres « élus par grâce » pour être contradictions et prophéties vivantes dans un monde humain ravagé. Chaque personne est appelée à être par sa présence un signe des temps, une apparition de Dieu.
Être des Élie modernes, c’est être un point de questionnement dans un monde qui ne se souvient que très peu de sa réalité spirituelle. L’émergence actuelle des techniques de bien-être, des méditations de toute sorte ou des spiritualités matérialistes ne sont que de pâles imitations d’une réelle spiritualité qui, par le rayonnement de sa Vérité, ébranle nos convictions, provoque la conversion et « fait violence » à tout ce qui n’est pas divin et humain.
Prions pour que, de plus en plus, se multiplient ces témoins, ces « élus par grâce !
